About Walk & Roll

Walk and Roll is a program brought to you by Safe Routes to School.  The Safe Routes to School Program is run by the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation (COAST), a non profit organization dedicated to the development of sustainable transportation in the Santa Barbara region.

Among the goals of SR2S are improved health and fitness for children, decreased traffic and air pollution, improved safety, and a better sense of community in our neighborhoods.

SR2S offers programs to promote walking and bicycling to school through educational efforts and incentives that make safety and fun number one for the students. The Program also addresses safety concerns of parents by encouraging local traffic law enforcement, educating parents about drop off and pick up safety and explores ways to create safer streets for our children around our schools.

What We Do

Safe Routes to School actively coordinates between local organizations, schools, parents, neighborhoods, City and County departments to encourage school children to lead active lifestyles while benefiting the neighborhood by slowing traffic and provide walking facilities to meet the needs of all. Our strategy focuses on the 5 E’s

Evaluation: Assess neighborhood conditions to determine needs, and measure the effectiveness of efforts to increase biking and walking. COAST’s SR2S coordinator works with your school’s Principal, your local jurisdiction’s Public Works staff and law enforcement to evaluate safety concerns around your school and work together to address the issues to create a safer environment for children. COAST's SR2S program also conducts surveys and mobility counts to evaluate efforts and effectiveness of programs and projects.

Education: Teach students and parents about safe biking, walking, and driving. SR2S offers Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Assemblies, Bicycle Rodeos, Pedal Power, Bike Fit and Safety Checks, Helmet Distributing events and more.

Encouragement: Promote special events such as Walk and Bike to School Days and piloting the Walk & Roll Challenge to encourage children and their families to walk or bike to school.

Engineering: Work with local government to apply for funds and build infrastructure such as crosswalks, multi-use paths, bike lanes, and sidewalks.

Enforcement: Works with local law enforcement agencies to increase presence while children arrive and depart from schools.
