Walk & Roll Challenge
The Walk & Roll to School Challenge is a fun encouragement program promoted by Safe Routes to School. It is an ongoing weekly challenge to walk, bike, skate, scooter or bus at least one day a week. Cold Spring School in Montecito and Brandon School in Goleta are the pioneering schools of a regular walk/bike day in the santa Barbara region. Cold Spring School celebrates Walk n Roll Wednesday and does not make it a challenge. Brandon School celebrates BOW WOW: Bike on Wednesday, Walk on Wednesday. Every Tuesday the champion at Brandon hangs large banners on campus every Tuesday to remind parents and students to Walk and Roll. Last year the winning class had an amazing participation rate of 76%.
This year, six elementary schools have started Walk & Roll campaigns including Adams, Harding, Cesar Chavez, Kellogg, Hope, and El Camino. La Cumbre Junior High also started a Walk & Roll Challenge this year. Homeroom classes will compete with one another to see which class has the highest rate of participation on Walk & Roll Day. The winning class will be announced in January and May. The La Cumbre Junior High Challenge begins on October 7th on Walk to School Day and culminates in May on Bike to School Day. By walking and rolling to school kids and parents experience not driving to school is a fun and healthy way to support earth-friendly actions and reduce congestion around our schools.
The Walk and Roll Campaign is brought to you by COAST’s Safe Routes to School Program in partnerships with Traffic Solutions, Community Environmental Council, the City of Santa Barbara, County of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, the City of Goleta, and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District.
